Pikachu and friends are finally coming to the big screen: Legendary has signed a deal with The Pokemon Company to develop the first live-action Pokemon movie!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will star Detective Pikachu, who’s from the Nintendo 3DS game of the same name. Wikipedia says the game follows a talking Pikachu “who, despite not being as powerful and nimble as other Pikachu of his kind, is rather intelligent and claims to be a great detective. One day, Pikachu encounters a boy named Tim Goodman, who is able to understand what he is saying. Thus, the two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city.”

Check out the video game’s trailer below. We’re not loving Pikachu’s voice in this because it’s jarringly different from what you’re used to. We hope that they use the classic Pika-voice we’ve all come to know and love for the movie:

“Details on the plot and story of the character are being kept under wraps,” THR says. “The film will be fast-tracked to start production in 2017.”

News of the adaptation follows the crazy success that Pokémon GO has enjoyed around the world over the past couple of weeks. The game has truly taken over many countries, with it being impossible to walk outside and not see someone playing it.

GO has proven there’s a ton of people still interested in the world of Pokémon, but will they turn out for a movie starring Detective Pikachu? We would’ve preferred to have seen a live-action Pokémon movie based on the original TV series, but ultimately we won’t be able to resist seeing Pikachu on the big screen.

The Pokemon Company has released quite a few animated movies, but this is the first time they’ll be developing one that is live-action.

Talk of a live-action Pokémon movie has been happening for years, but it’s only thanks to GO that this movie is being “fast-tracked.”
