Disney’s live-action Mulan is officially coming to Disney+— but it’ll come at a cost if you want to watch it!
During an earnings report presentation that took place on Tuesday (August 4) afternoon, the Walt Disney Company revealed plans to forgo a traditional theatrical release for its live-action Mulan. Instead, the studio announced plans to send the highly anticipated feature film straight to Disney+.
The film won’t simply be available for subscribers of the streaming service however. Instead, those who wish to watch the studio’s latest live-action adaptation will have to shell out $29.99 to do so.
Word of the big news came during The Walt Disney Company’s earnings call on Tuesday afternoon.
“BREAKING: Mulan will be available to Disney+ subscribers on September 4 for $29.99 in the US,” tweeted theme park blogger Scott Gustin, who was on the earnings call.
In addition, Gustin also said that the Walt Disney Company plans to simultaneously release the film in theaters wherever possible.

Disney fans who’ve been following release news surrounding the live-action adaptation will know that the studio has shifted the release date for Mulan quite a few times over the course of the past few months due to the current coronavirus pandemic.
Releasing the live-action adaptation via Disney+ in addition to debuting it in theaters wherever it is safe to do so seems like the best compromise given the current climate of the pandemic.
At the same time, that the studio plans to charge Disney+ subscribers an extra fee if they wish to enjoy Mulan in the comfort of their own homes is a bit of a new approach.
Previously, the studio’s Artemis Fowl adaptation was sent straight to streaming despite plans for a theatrical release because of the current coronavirus pandemic. Disney, however, did not opt to charge Disney+ subscribers an extra fee to stream said film.
With that in mind, it’ll be interesting to see if the new tactic Disney is trying out with Mulan will seep over into future feature films that head to Disney+ for early releases.
Mulan will be available to Disney+ subscribers in the US on September 4 for $29.99.
