An extensive piece released by USA Today this evening highlights the steps publisher Little, Brown is taking to release and promote J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy.

For starters, we now know that Rowling will be making United States television appearances on ABC’s Nightline, World News and Good Morning America programs, as well as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central. She’ll also participate in two print interviews in the U.S., one of which is with USA Today.

When it comes to pre-release hype, a Madison, Connecticut bookseller disappointingly noted that it hasn’t received much in the way of advertising. “I’ve been in the dark,” says Kathryn Fabiani, “We had no posters … It hasn’t been easy. People are curious, but they don’t know what to expect. [The upcoming release] seems almost invisible. We’ve been taking some pre-orders and we’ve got some activity, but nothing like Harry Potter.”

As for the unique marketing campaign being run for the book, Barnes & Noble believes most of it was at the wishes of Rowling herself. B&N vice president for marketing Patricia Bostelman says, “Apparently much of their behavior is at J.K. Rowling’s wishes. She has very strong opinions on how she wants publishing of the book handled. … She’s trying not to live on the laurels of Harry Potter and very much wants to have this book stand alone, on its own merit, just as if she were just any other author who was landing on the scene.”

Finally, it is confirmed that no advanced copies will be released for press. The book has an initial print run in the U.S. of two million.

Earlier today we learned that Rowling’s only United States fan appearance will be in New York City for a ticketed audience of 1,100.
