Hamilton himself, Lin-Manuel Miranda, lent his talents to John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight, rapping about his parents’ home country Puerto Rico.

John Oliver has a way of making people care about important issues that don’t get the mainstream media spotlight they deserve.

But sometimes you gotta bring in some backup, and who better than Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and star of Broadway smash hit Hamilton?

Not only is Lin-Manuel Miranda socially aware and conscious of world issues, but he also has a personal connection to this particular crisis: his parents were both born in Puerto Rico, and he reportedly spent a lot of time there as a child, visiting his grandparents.

Check out the powerful segment:

What’s happening in the U.S. territory is pretty horrifying. Puerto Rico is in the middle a massive financial crisis, as Oliver explains, facing nearly $70 billion in public debt.

Because of Congress legislation, Puerto Rico isn’t able to secure bankruptcy protection. The industry has collapsed, and the school system and hospitals aren’t getting the funding they need because of the Constitutional provision stating that debts must be paid before education and health needs are covered.

As John Oliver points out, Puerto Ricans are American citizens. As such, “We have to start treating [Puerto Rico] like an island of American citizens whose fate is interwoven with ours.”

He also names some famous Puerto Ricans, including of course Lin-Manuel Miranda, who won the Pulitzer Price for Hamilton just last week. He made a heartfelt plea to Congress, stating that “it’s a fixable problem,” and that “if Hamilton tickets can help, I will do that, too.”

After hearing how horrible conditions are in Puerto Rico, we have to agree with John Oliver: We hope Congress takes him up on the offer. Especially considering what he promises in the rap, too! Let’s hope this helps.
