Lin-Manuel Miranda is leaving Hamilton tomorrow, July 9. Fans desperate to see him in the role are buying tickets for upwards of $20,000 apiece.

“Alexander Hamilton, my name is Alexander Hamilton.”

But tomorrow, his name won’t be. Or rather, the name will belong to someone else: Javier Muñoz, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s alternate in both Hamilton and In the Heights, is taking over the role after its originator steps down Saturday, July 9.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also wrote the book, music and lyrics for the smash hit Broadway musical, is moving on after just over a year, having taken the show through The Public Theater to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre.

And he’s not the only one: Saturday night will also be the curtain call for Phillipa Soo (Eliza Schuyler) and Leslie Odom, Jr. (Aaron Burr). The new Eliza is Lexie Lawson, and the new Burr is Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon.

Hamilton tickets were already almost impossible to come by, and since the news of Miranda, Soo and Odom, Jr.’s imminent exits, the price just went way up. Entertainment Weekly reports that ticket sellers are trying to scalp tickets for up to $20,000 apiece on StubHub, and the lowest asking price seems to be $2,700 on Craigslist.

This is obviously outrageous. On one hand, you almost can’t blame the individuals trying to cash in on this craze, on the other it’s obviously 100% unethical and against the spirit of theater.

We just hope no one actually throws away their life savings, as amazing as it would be to see Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hamilton live on stage. (Or, if someone has $20,000 to blow on a theater performance: Consider donating to charity.) Especially considering the actor himself has said that it’s likely he’ll reprise his role from time to time.

Meanwhile, the show’s been filmed and locked safely away at ‘Gringotts,’ and hopefully we won’t have to wait too many decades before we see the full show on movie theaters or online (legally!). There’s also a Hamilton documentary airing this fall on PBS which will feature some footage from the show, and of course the musical is coming to the West Coast.
