Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch movie has found its director in none other than Jon M. Chu!

According to Variety, Crazy Rich Asians helmer Jon M. Chu has officially signed on to direct the upcoming live-action adaptation of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch.

Chu is far from the only notable name working on the adaptation behind the camera. Others who’ve also boarded the project include Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who are no strangers to Disney live-action adaptations.

The duo most recently worked on Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin, and will serve as producers for the studio’s new take on Lilo & Stitch.

News that Disney was looking to give its early 2000s animated hit the adaptation treatment first broke two years ago in October 2018. Both Lin and Eirich have been attached to produce since the live-action adaptation was first announced. At the time, we also learned that the studio had tapped Mike Van Waes to pen the script for the forthcoming adaptation.

First released back in 2002, the original animated family feature is set in Hawaii. It tells the story of a lonely human girl who ends up befriending an alien creature who is sent down from space by the aliens who engineered him in an effort to cause mass destruction.

While one could argue that there’s no need for yet another live-action adaptation, we’re sure Disney fans will be curious to see how the studio goes about pulling this particular adaptation off— especially given that most likely, the film will have to incorporate some sort of CGI element.

Currently unknown is whether Lilo & Stitch will hit theaters, or if the live-action adaptation will follow in the footsteps of Lady and the Tramp and head straight to streaming on Disney+.
