Great news! The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is officially slated to begin a run on Broadway.
The musical based on the Rick Riordan-penned Percy Jackson books, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, had quite a successful run off-Broadway. The show enjoyed a great run at the Lucille Lortel Theater in New York City when it opened in 2017, and it also went on a successful national tour, hitting up over 30 cities, and delighting fans across the nation.
And now, the show is officially headed to Broadway.
According to Variety, The Percy Jackson Musical will head to the Great White Way on September 20 with an official opening night on October 16. The show will make its Broadway home at the Longacre Theatre, and is slated for a 16-week run.
The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical follows the Riordan books, and follows the titular Percy as he discovers he has god-like powers. With his newfound powers, Percy must work to fight off monsters chasing him to find Zeus’ lightning bolt to prevent a war between the Greek gods.
For a show about Greek gods and teens fighting off deadly monsters, the show is a pretty tightly-run ship. As Variety explains, though there are 50 roles in the show, only seven actors are used to portray the various parts. Casting announcements haven’t been made for the Broadway run yet, but those announcements are expected to come very soon.
While the show is based on Riordan’s novel, the show’s book is written by Joe Tracz with music and lyrics by Rob Rokicki. The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical will be the Broadway debut for Rokicki.
Reviews for the off-Broadway run were, by and large, positive, so it will be exciting to see how Broadway patrons respond to the show. If nothing else, bringing Percy Jackson to Broadway will introduce a whole new audience to this amazing show, and those of us outside of New York who haven’t seen it yet can always cross our fingers for another national tour.
