Awards season for theatre is in full swing, and The Lightning Thief received recognition from the Drama Desk Awards.

The Drama Desks are one of the most prestigious awards for theatre in New York City, and they combine Broadway and off-Broadway without distinction (unlike the OCC awards, which have separate categories for the two). Their nominating The Lightning Thief means it’s not just one of the best shows playing off-Broadway, it’s one of the best shows in New York (of course, we’ve been saying that for a while).

The Lightning Thief was nominated for the night’s biggest honor, Outstanding Musical. It will compete against Anastasia, Come From Away, The Band’s Visit (off-Broadway), and Hadestown (off-Broadway). George Salazar, who plays Grover and Mr. D, was nominated for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical. Librettist Joe Tracz was nominated for Outstanding Book of a Musical.

The Drama Desk Awards will be presented June 4. Of interest to readers anticipating the Tony Awards, Hello Dolly!, Anastasia, and Come From Away received the most nominations – Playbill has the full list. Here’s hoping The Lightning Thief wins!

The good news comes the day after the cast went to the studio to record the cast album. The PJO fandom has done them proud:

The Lightning Thief is playing at the Lucille Lortel through May 6. Tickets are available at their website, and they’re running a special promotion next week for Fan Appreciation Days.
