Ang Lee’s The Life of Pi, based on the book by Yann Martel, is nearing its November release. In anticipation, the very first clip from the film has been released.

The scene includes an introduction from director Lee, who tells the viewer he hopes it captures the spirit of Pi. In the scene, Pi and the tiger face tension between each other over one of the fish and then come many of the flying fish overhead.

Life of Pi is the story of Indian boy Pi who encounters several animals including a hyena, zebra, orangutan, and the cover-famous Bengal tiger after a shipwreck in the Pacific Ocean. If you haven’t yet read the book by Yann Martel from 2001, we highly recommend you do. Pi Patel is played by Suraj Sharma.

Judging from this clip, and the trailer released in September, Life of Pi is undoubtedly a whimsical and visual treat.

Director Ang Lee spoke at CinemaCon earlier this year about taking on the project. “I wanted to be the one to do the impossible,” he said when addressing the question of how adapting this story was fathomable. “Call it ego, or childish, or excitement. It looks like it’s impossible. Not because it’s not visually written – it was – but it was so expensive, and it’s a philosophical book. I think that’s where people draw a line.”

Life of Pi hits theaters Nov. 21.
