Liev Schreiber will take on an Ernest Hemingway classic as part of his next big screen role.

According to Deadline, actor Liev Schreiber has joined the cast of Across The River And Into The Trees.

The forthcoming film is based off of the Ernest Hemingway book of the same name, which also happens to be the famed writer’s final novel.

Set in Italy, the post World War II novel focuses on on 50-year-old Colonel Richard Cantwell, an American Army officer who suddenly learns that he has a terminal heart condition. Following diagnosis, Cantwell sets off on what is meant to be a fairly uneventful duck hunting trip to Venice.

It’s there that Cantwell finds his path crossing with that of Renata, a Venetian woman who is significantly younger than he is. Though the novel takes place following the Second World War, the book also delves into Cantwell’s time fighting in the First World War through flashbacks.

For his part, the Ray Donovan star will take on the role of Colonel Richard Cantwell— a character Hemingway based on his real life friend and decorated soldier, Colonel Buck Lanham.

Joining Liev Schreiber in the drama are actors Matilda De Angelis, Laura Morante, Javier Camara, and Giancarlo Giannini.

Behind the camera, BAFTA nominated scribe Peter Flannery will pen the script for the adaptation. Spanish filmmaker Paula Ortiz will serve as director on the project.

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect Across The River And Into The Trees to premiere, but production on the film is slated to start next month in Venice, Italy.
