I will begin this by stating that, yes, I am a Phillip fan and, yes, I might not be writing this if he hadn’t of won. But I am also someone who doesn’t typically watch American Idol or get too heavily invested in the turnout of TV competitions. Still, remember to take all opinions you read anywhere with a grain of salt.

So another white guy who stands in front of the mic with a guitar has won American Idol. How dare America do that, right? Wrong. It’s a TV competition that has been on the air for years now. If you really think that each season is going to bring in a whole new demographic you’re kidding yourself. The same people are watching and voting season after season so it’s not a surprise that many of the winners fit into roughly the same mold. And that isn’t going to change anytime soon.

If you’re tired of seeing this happen over and over again, then stop watching American Idol. And it’s not about America being racist. Is there racism in America still? Yes, just as there is still racism all around the world. Should you be judging America’s racism based off television competition shows? No. Like I said, it’s the same people voting every year and they certainly don’t provide a competent sample of the entirety of America’s population and musical preferences.

And let’s be honest, the winner is pretty much irrelevant. As long as they’ve made into the top 6 or so they have a pretty decent chance of getting their talent out there for the world and record companies to see. So Jessica, Josh, Hollie, and Skylar all have a chance of making it even without the Idol contract. Chris Daughtry came in fourth during his season and has been doing a mighty fine job. And many runners-up outshine the winners. We don’t really know who the true winner will be until a few years down the road when we can see how their careers have gone.

So take a deep breath. I promise it will all be all right even if your idol didn’t win. It’s just a TV competition. You still have to get up the same as always tomorrow morning no matter who was just announced the winner.

In a few years, if Phillip completely bombs at having a music career and Jessica is the next Beyoncé, then you can track me down and say, “I told you so.” I won’t really care and will most likely have some more rhetoric for you about why you need to not take reality shows so seriously. But hey, it’ll make you feel better.
