In early planning of The Dark Knight Rises, Warner Bros. originally dicussed the possibility of Leonardo DiCaprio starring as The Riddler.

Many actors from the cast of Inception are starring in this summer’s final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy – but DiCaprio is notably not joining his former cast members from the 2010 blockbuster.  In a new interview with Empire Magazine (via Slash Film), screenwriter David Goyer recalled what Warner Bros. said in 2008 in early planning stages of The Dark Knight Rises villain:

“Obviously it’s gonna be The Riddler, and we want it to be Leonardo DiCaprio.”

This clearly changed over the course of planning, as Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy are starring as the villains Catwoman and Bane instead of DiCaprio as The Riddler.

What do you think? Would you have liked to see DiCaprio in The Dark Knight Rises? Or are you happy thus far from the teasers with Hathaway and Hardy?

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters on July 20, and you can watch the trailer here.
