It’s the role he was almost literally born to play: Leonardo DiCaprio will play Leonardo da Vinci in an upcoming biopic.

According to Variety, Paramount has obtained the rights to a movie about the world-renowned Italian painter Leonardo da Vinci, based on the yet-to-be-published Leonardo da Vinci biography by Walter Isaacson.

Starring as Italian Renaissance artist-slash-universal genius is Leonardo DiCaprio, which is probably the most fitting casting decision Hollywood has ever made, since DiCaprio was literally named after the iconic painter.

In an interview with NPR in 2014, DiCaprio revealed:

“My father tells me that they were on their honeymoon at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, I believe. They were looking at a da Vinci painting, and allegedly I started kicking furiously while my mother was pregnant. And my father took that as a sign, and I suppose DiCaprio wasn’t that far from da Vinci. And so, my dad, being the artist that he is, said, “That’s our boy’s name.”

Leonardo da Vinci is of course the man behind such iconic paintings as the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper and the Vitruvian Man, but he was also famous for his works in the fields of sculpting, architecture, science, music, botany, astronomy and much more.

There is an air of mystery surrounding da Vinci’s life and works; he was curiously ahead of his time, sometimes credited with inventing solar power, the calculator, the parachute, the helicopter and the tank, and is said to have had a near-superhuman mind.

Leo 2.0 will also be producing the movie under his Appian Way production banner, with Jennifer Davisson.
