Ahead of Gamescom, TT Games released a hilarious trailer for Lego: The Lord of the Rings, and now we’re getting further details leaking out of Europe’s largest gaming convention. Every area of Middle-Earth that was visited in the novels will be explorable in the game, and we’ll even get to play as some characters that aren’t present in the film adaptation.

A fast-travel system will be in place to enable players to teleport instantly from Weathertop to Hobbiton and Moria to Helm’s Deep, but if you’d rather ride or walk all the way across Middle-Earth, that’ll be an option too, the Verge reports.

Areas will only become accessible as you progress through the game’s story, IGN revealed, but there’s plenty to encourage you to revisit past zones. Puzzles and secrets can provide new weapons and materials. Find enough mithril, and you can craft yourself better armor.

The Verge also reported that 85 characters will be playable in Lego: The Lord of the Rings, including the Fellowship (with dialogue lifted straight from the films) and, more interestingly, some who did not appear in the movie versions of Tolkien’s books.

Lego: LOTR is due to release this fall on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, 3DS and PC.
