The LEGO Movie was originally meant to feature R2-D2 from the Star Wars franchise in a prominent role.

If anything could have made The LEGO Movie more awesome, it would have been every kid’s favourite Star Wars character, the lovable robot R2-D2.

And now we know how close we were to actually seeing the beeping wonder star alongside Emmet, Batman, Wonder Woman and Spaceman Benny.

Speaking to Yahoo!, writers and directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord revealed their original plan to include R2-D2 in the film, joining Lego-fied characters from a wide variety of franchises including Superman, Harry Potter and Ninja Turtles.

In fact, he was meant to be a “Batman-level character,” probably joining the gang of heroes as they set out to stop President Business.

But while other Star Wars characters and objects make cameo appearances (including Han Solo and C-3PO), Disney refused to relinquish control of R2-D2 for such a significant role.

Miller laments this decision, saying, “A kid doesn’t have lawyers that won’t allow the toys to play together.”

We guess it was just really hard for them to work it around R2-D2’s busy schedule, what with him filming Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens and everything.

The smash hit LEGO Movie is getting a sequel, of course. Yesterday the creators confirmed that the second movie will have more female protagonists, and “more female stuff.”

A Lego Batman spinoff movie is also confirmed; clearly, DC Comics doesn’t have the same worries about over-exposing its characters.
