With the original film’s directorial duo focusing on other projects, the studio decided The Lego Movie Sequel should get a makeover.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wrote and directed The Lego Movie, but right now they’re a little preoccupied by their next project — the Han Solo spinoff movie. They haven’t totally abandoned ship, though, since they did write the original script for the sequel and will be staying on as producers. Rob Schrab will be taking over directing duties.

Warner Bros. has since decided the script needed a face lift, so they brought in BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg to do a rewrite, according to Variety.

A rewrite for the script doesn’t necessarily have to be bad news for the movie. It’s true that it was pushed back to February 8, 2019 (probably due to this rewrite), but nobody gets a script right on the first try. Bringing in an outside mind will present more potential ideas for clever gags and plot points. Plus, with Lord and Miller still producing, communication within the team will ensure the second movie is just as awesome as the first.

It’s a bummer we have to wait just under three years for The Lego Movie Sequel, but luckily we have The Lego Batman Movie to placate us.

Back in March we got our first look at the upcoming Batman spinoff, which releases on February 10, 2017, and the images depicted a sad, lonely knight. But never fear because trailers one and two were gut-wrenchingly hilarious, and all but prove The Lego Batman Movie will be a worthy followup film to the original Lego Movie.
