On Legends of Tomorrow season 5, episode 4, the Legends travel to Central City in 2004 when an Encore rears its head to cause mischief at a high school reunion. Who’s the Encore? A serial killer, of course.

On Legends of Tomorrow season 5, episode 4, an Encore splits the team between 1989 and 2004 as a serial killer convicted of killing his high school classmates at prom, in 1989, comes back following his execution in 2004, which just so happens to be right around the time his former classmates reunite for their high school reunion.

We obviously had a chance to view the episode early, and have put together a few teases about what’s to come. As always, if those aren’t your thing, scroll down for our spoiler-free review!

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ season 5, episode 4 screener secrets

Ava’s love of true crime

On Legends of Tomorrow season 5, episode 4, we get a glimpse at one of Ava’s passions: her obsession with true crime. Like, she literally has her own true crime podcast and ranks serial killers. It’s a very fun episode for Ava, and there are a few very sweet moments between her and Sara amidst the chaos of the mission.

One of Ava’s dreams is to be the “final girl” in a horror film situation… will she get her wish? I will tell you that Ava plays a key role in discovering what’s going on with this Encore, and it brings out a very clever side to her. It’s magical watching Ava grow with each episode, and this is no different.

Nora confronts her past

With Nora in the mix, as a fairy godmother on Legends of Tomorrow season 5, episode 4, it gives her an opportunity to reflect on her past. As we all know, she’s done some pretty terrible things, taking her anger out on the world because of what happened to her and her father. But because of her scars, it helped lead her to the Legends and, specifically, to Ray.

Going back to 1989 to help that half of the team stop the serial killer from ever, well, killing anyone, it gives her a new perspective on everything she’s been through and her current “job” as a fairy godmother. What can she use her power for?

Plus, there are some adorable moments with Ray, like attending her first ever high school prom with him. What’s not to love about that?

Zari Tarazi: Businesswoman, makeup guru, bad bitch, and overall genius

After coming aboard the Waverider unexpectedly, Behrad spends the episode attempting to coax Zari into chilling out, so she doesn’t ruin his life by telling their parents that he’s traveling through time with their family’s totem. (This may or may not include imprisoning Zari on the Waverider.)

But it wouldn’t be Legends if these two weren’t given the opportunity to discuss their feelings and attempt to come to an understanding with one another. Even though this is a new Zari, there are flashes of the old Zari within her, which is heartwarming to see. And expect Zari to get herself into some trouble.

Legends of Tomorrow… and Constantine

Most of the time, Constantine’s presence on the show feels like an entirely different show, and Legends of Tomorrow season 5, episode 4 is no different. Separated from the group, Constantine returns to a home he shared with Astra in the past and finds an unexpected visitor (in a place he expected to be empty).

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ season 5, episode 4 spoiler-free review

Though I wouldn’t call Legends of Tomorrow season 5, episode 4 outstanding or shocking by any means, I would say it’s my favorite episode since season 3. It’s fun, emotional, with the right balance of Legends‘ usual mania and a heartfelt story.

Courtney Ford truly shines with her return as Nora Darhk, and it’s so interesting to get a clear picture of how much Nora has grown since we first met her as a demon’s vessel… and who knows, maybe being a fairy godmother isn’t the worst thing that has ever happened to her, as much as she dreads it. Likewise, Jes Macallan gives a fun performance as Ava, as her love of true crime distracts her a bit from the mission at hand.

While I’m not a huge fan of Constantine’s separate story, it’s clear that the writers are gearing up for something huge, and I’m excited to see how his story further intertwines with the Legends’ own battles with Encores… Maybe they’ll even get him aboard the Waverider for good this season (high hopes, I know).

If Legends of Tomorrow keeps this up, it could definitely be the best Arrow-verse show of the 2019-20 TV season.

Legends of Tomorrow season 5, episode 4 airs Tuesday, February 11 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW!
