The Legend of Zelda may be coming to the small screen thanks to Netflix and Nintendo.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the instant streaming service is working “closely” with the video game maker to develop a live-action series based on the iconic video game. The Legend of Zelda series would follow Link, the game’s main character.

A source describes the show as a Game of Thrones-type series but for families.

The hypothetical Legend of Zelda series is currently without a writer and Netflix and Nintendo did not want to comment for the report. The Wall Street Journal cautions that development on the project is still in early days, and that they may decide to scrap it entirely if it’s not working out.

The news comes after we learned in December that Sony is working with Nintendo to develop an animated Super Mario Bros. movie.

With slagging video game sales in recent years, Nintendo seems to be interested in reinvigorating its classic franchises with help from Hollywood.

Nintendo is currently wrapping up work on a new installment of The Legend of Zelda for Wii U. It’s due out later this year and promises an open-world environment. Check out a preview below:

Netflix has been on a roll lately with new series ideas. Over the past year they’ve announced a Series of Unfortunate Events series and a Magic School Bus reboot.

Do you think ‘The Legend of Zelda’ could work as a TV show?

We’d love if the series pulled from storylines found in Zelda video games. Hopefully the writer of the show loves Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask.
