Our The Legend of Korra season 2, episode 5 ‘Peacekeepers’ recap goes in depth of all of the details of tonight’s exciting episode!

The episode opens up as Lin greets Mako and Korra. “Welcome home Avatar. Thanks for starting a war.”

She tells Mako he needs to join in stopping the Southern Water Tribe march tonight from becoming too unruly, with Korra offering her help. Mako tells her to try and seem neutral by not going along, which angers Korra. Varrick speaks of a meeting with the President of the United Forces coming up.

When Bolin asks what he should do, Varrick offers him an exclusive look at Republic City at night.

Back at the Southern Water Tribe, Unalaq meets with a war advisor about where Tonraq and the rebels are hiding away. Unalaq says that he will take no immediate action on them, claiming that his brother isn’t a threat, while telling the advisor to increase security on the Spirit Portal.

Desna and a very different looking Eska arrive, and are told by Unalaq that they need to go find Korra, because she’s the only one that can open the Northern Spirit Portal. Desna combats that his father told Korra he didn’t need her anymore, but Unalaq states that he was only telling Korra what he thought she needed to hear.

Eska chimes in that she’ll find the Avatar. “I’ll find her. She stole my husband,” a tear-ridden Eska proclaims. Unalaq states that he needs her alive, much to the displeasure of Eska.

Tenzin looks on as Meelo tries to train his adopted lemur, Pokie. Meelo’s training skills are less than adequately developed, and Tenzin mutters critiques of his five-year-old son’s methods. When Pokie gets bored and flies off, Tenzin offers to teach Meelo how to become “a master trainer,” and Meelo eagerly agrees.

That night at the peace rally, the pro-bending announcer’s voice over kicks in. “Tensions are running high outside of the Southern Water Tribe cultural center.” Korra leads the protestors, all holding candles. The Northern Water Tribe sits on the sidelines, jeering at the protestors.

Standing alone in an alleyway, Mako jumps when he hears a noise behind himself. He notices two men wearing red robes, and demands them to stop where they are.

One of the rebels responds by pressing a button on a device, causing a large explosion to emit from hidden bombs in nearby buildings. Mako tries to control the engulfing flames, as the peaceful protestors watch on in horror. Mako finds the two men, whom he Firebend fights with, until they make their getaway in a car, leaving behind their detonation device.

Mako meets back up with Korra as she’s Waterbending the flames down. She relates to him that the Northern Water Tribe is out of control, to which he responds that he witnessed a Firebender set off the bomb. Korra states that this doesn’t prove that the North still wasn’t part of the explosion.

Varrick and Bolin arrive at a red carpet of sorts. Bolin tells Varrick “Wow! Usually, when I see flashing lights like this, it’s because I got hit in the head with a rock.” Varrick coly responds, “Being famous is like getting hit in the head with a rock, all the time.”

The two sit at their booth in the pro-bending arena. A random notices Bolin in the stands, after which the pro-bending announcer interviews him.

Bolin tells of the disturbing recent events he’s been involved in, much to the ado of the crowd. He bounces back by telling them “But there’s nowhere I’d rather be than pro-bending in Republic City! Am I right people?” When asked if he misses being in the matches, Bolin relates that while there’s a lot that he found unpleasant during the fights, he misses the fans the most.

Varrick takes Bolin aside, where the two discuss how awesome Bolin is at public speaking. “Whenever I get confused, I just say ‘Republic City’ or ‘fans,’ and then everyone cheers,” Bolin cheerfully says. Varrick mysteriously claims, “I just figured out your true calling.”

The next morning, Korra and Varrick meet at the Republic City hall. Varrick assures her that President Riko will help them, because Varrick was a big contributor to the current President’s campaign. “Him and the other guy – gotta hedge your bets!”

Upon meeting the President, he immediately has a photo op of himself shaking the Avatar’s hand. When he asks how he can help her, she cuts to the chase and states that he needs to send the United Forces to the South.

While the President admits that he’s concerned with what’s going on in the Southern Water Tribe, he doesn’t “think that it’s the Republic’s place to interfere with internal Water Tribe matters.” Korra combats this by stating that Unalaq isn’t the rightful chief of the Southern Water Tribe. Also, Varrick states that the Republic is already involved after last night’s attack.

When the President responds that they’re “doing everything in their power to bring the people responsible to justice,” Korra states that the only people potentially responsible are the Northern Water Tribe members. The President begins to condescend her for being young and losing her perspective, after which Korra angrily asserts that the President is the one who’s lost perspective.

The President looks to end the meeting by claiming that he’s looking for a diplomatic solution to the conflict, and that his mind is made up on this matter. Korra gets the last word in by saying “My family is going to be wiped out, and it’ll be on your head for doing nothing about it!”

Later that day, Korra talks to Mako about how the President doesn’t seem to care about the outcome of the Civil War. Mako states that the President does indeed care, but that it’s not logical to tell “his people to go fight a battle in the South that has nothing to do with them.”

Korra gets angry at Mako for taking the President’s side, which degrades to a petty verbal fight between the couple. Korra leaves (“I can’t talk to you when you’re like this!”) and Mako gets the last response of “You’re the one who’s like this!”

Korra bumps into Asami at the port, and the two state that they both have to go talk to Varrick. Arriving on Varrick’s boat, they are nearly shot as Varrick hits a bullseye with an arrow.

Korra’s there to let Varrick know that there’s no time to wait for the Presidents’ troops, while Asami states that her “company is about to go under.”

Varrick has an “idea storm” and gives the girls an “inside look” at how he’s been so successful over the years. “Brainwork requires increased circulation,” says Varrick, chomping down on a hot red pepper.

Varrick then hangs himself upside down from his shoes, and shouts out his “best ideas” to Zhu Li. After saying nonsense about potential products, he realizes that there’s no need to go through the President to get the troops; “If there’s one thing I know about troops, it’s that they love fighting!”

Korra states that they’re going to be able to enlist the help of General Iroh, while Varrick tells Asami that it’d be beneficial for Future Industries to sell mecha tanks to the Southern rebels.

“If you can’t make money during a war, you just flat-out can’t make money!” says an excited Varrick. When Asami states that she’ll only brave the dangerous seas if Varrick will, he exclaims that he loves doing “crazy-risky” things.

Varrick lands on the ground, as Korra asks him “why it’s been so difficult to get Republic City to support the South?” Varrick assures her that his propaganda film will convince the troops easily, and shows the group a documentary of the Northern Invasion.

Bolin freaks out dramatically when Eska looks at him via the film. “We’re gonna cut this footage together with scenes we shoot of our superstar Bolin here, playing a Southern Water Tribe hero,” Varrick states in a very President Coin from The Hunger Games-like manner. The film will be titled, The Adventures of Nuktuk, Hero of the South.

While Mako is looking through an old picture book, Bolin interrupts his brother (see: the first 15 seconds of Avenue Q’s “If You Were Gay”). He tells Mako the plans that they’ve made, much to Mako’s detest of the new plan of attack.

Mako tells Bolin that he’s not convinced that the Northern Water Tribe was behind last night’s bombing at the peace rally, and proves this to himself when he finds a picture of the Firebender he witnessed setting off the bomb. Mako runs off to share the news with Lin.

Tenzin’s lessons with Meelo for Pokie begin, with Meelo failing to follow his father’s instructions. “No, you’re rewarding him for bad behavior,” Tenzin scolds. Later on, Tenzin tells Meelo that letting Pokie nap in his bed won’t teach Pokie that Meelo is the “alpha leader.” Meelo reluctantly obliges, and states that “being alpha is lonely,” which Tenzin agrees to.

Back at Republic City, the President grills Lin about not capturing the bombers yet. Mako arrives at the police office and exclaims that he’s found a “break in the bombing case.”

Mako is tricked into interrupting the meeting between the police chief and President, humoring Mako’s supers. Mako comes back to the two men, and tells him of the I.D.ed bomber.

Mako claims that “someone must’ve hired him to make it look like the Northerners attacked the Cultural Center.” When the office workers simply grunt at Mako’s findings, he asks if they found out anything more about the remote control Mako found at the scene of the bombing, and anger Mako by telling him to “give it a rest.”

The President walks out of the meeting and greets Mako with high compliments of Mako’s police work. When the President states that Mako’s dating the Avatar, he tries to make Mako confess what Korra and Varrick are planning. Mako obliges, gorging a hole in our ship.

At the port, Iroh and Korra meet to discuss the military support needed for the Southern Water Tribes’ rebels side. Iroh creates a “hypothetical” situation, in which he would bring his troops to the South for “routine training maneuvers. But say we were to accidentally run into a hostile Northern blockade…”

In the middle of Korra’s meeting, the President arrives and tells Iroh that “if a single vessel leaves this harbor without my say-so, you’ll be court-marshaled.” The President continues to tell Korra that her actions are “bordering on insurrection,” and that it’s not the duty of the Avatar to control military troops.

When the President leaves, Korra shouts that she hates the President, but that she also understands how Iroh’s hands are tied. He gives her a lead to go and speak with the Fire Lord (Zuko?!?!?!) for help.

In a saucy transition, Bolin’s Nuktuk filming is underway, with Bolin wearing little more than underwear. The movie star Ginger is on set to sell a hair care product within the film.

Korra crashes the shoot by asking Bolin to watch Naga when she’s at the Fire Nation to get their help. Korra relates that she wasn’t able to get Iroh’s help after the President interrupted their meeting, and the group realizes that Mako was the one who tipped the President off about their plans.

Meelo’s training of Pokie has been working. Tenzin compliments Meelo, and Meelo shows off that he’s trained “all of the lemurs.” Meelo whistles to command a large flock of lemurs. Tenzin hilariously states “I’ve created a monster,” and tells Meelo that it’s time to just have fun as opposed to training.

Korra busts down the police office’s door and verbally attacks Mako for ratting out her plan to the President. Mako retaliates by telling her that he “had a job to do. I can’t constantly be worrying about keeping you from making another huge mistake!”

Korra kicks away his desk and fights back that she also has a job as the Avatar. Their ship sinks. Hard. Mako does the dirty deed of telling her that they’re broken up. Korra storms off.

Lin arrives to relieve some tension, saying “You got off easy. You should’ve seen Air Temple Island after Tenzin broke up with me.”

Crying as she drives a speedboat alone, Korra is bombarded by attacks from her twin cousins. Eska chops Korra’s boat in half, forcing Korra to swim away to survive.

Korra bends a water cyclone while aiming fireballs at the water-surfing twins, who dodge her incoming attacks. Korra’s nearly defeated, but uses her cyclone to seemingly fend the ferocious twins off.

Little did Korra know, a rogue spirit glowing green underwater interrupted the fight.

The giant Pacific Rim-like spirit emerges from the water, screeching to all Hell. Korra dodges some of its attacks, but is eventually knocked out into the distance.

She kicks into the Avatar State, and begins to do the same type of mysterious gold bending that Unalaq demonstrated in 2×01.

The spirit turns gold, almost concedes defeat, but ends the battle by engulfing our Avatar. The twins witness this, and leave the scene without emotion.

The Legend of Korra season 2 will air at a new time for the show, as was recently announced. Going forward, new episodes of The Legend of Korra will air at 8:30 p.m. on Friday nights on Nickelodeon.
