Like so many supernatural shows that came before, early Legacies episodes have adopted a monster-of-the-week format and it’s stoking the nostalgia-fires something fierce.

Legacies is off to a fantastic start, and, while each episode takes us further and further into the bigger mysteries surrounding the school and its characters, we also have spent a large part of the first few episodes learning that controlling the supernatural abilities of its students is not the only hurdle facing the Salvatore School and its headmaster.

In addition to feeding our love for The Vampire Diaries and The Originals by extending the life of our favorite world, Legacies has stepped into new territory that has us excited for each and every episode.

We’ve already learned that humanoid dragons and gargoyles are definitely a thing, and opening the door to magical creatures in this universe invites all new kinds of trouble. And its the kind of trouble that takes us back to the great old series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville that embraced the challenges of introducing new creatures and obstacles for our characters every week, while also pushing the greater narrative forward.

Each week opens the door for a crazy new threat to waltz right in, and there’s no telling what kind of impact it will have on the greater world, and story, at large. I, for one, am excited to see what other crazy creatures will descend upon Alaric and his supernatural safe haven.

Not to mention the fact that each of our creature-ific obstacles so far has had at least some tie to this mysterious knife that seems to have some pretty impressive powers. Buffy had the hellmouth and Smallville had the meteor rocks, so will this knife be Legacies beacon that draws every supernatural threat to Mystic Falls? Maybe we’ll find out soon.

This marriage of nostalgia and newness is exactly the recipe we were hoping Legacies would follow. It perfectly combines the old and new, helping this new chapter of the TVD-Universe feel fresh and unencumbered by the enormous history that constantly looms over Mystic Falls.

‘Legacies’ airs Thursdays at 9pm EST on the CW.
