Pixar’s Inside Out was fantastic, but the short film that played before it was just as memorable.

Lava follows a volcano named Uku in the middle of the Pacific Ocean who’s feeling lonely without someone to love lava. Despite his dismay, he continues to sing about his dreams for thousands of years. After finally shrinking to a tiny volcano, Uku discovers that a lady volcano named Lele has been listening to him all of this time. Lele grows into a full size volcano and begins singing Uku’s song, which gives Uku the strength to return to full form. By the end, the two volcanoes are together as one.

Kuana Torres Kahele and Napua Greig are the voices behind the volcanoes. Lava was directed by James Ford Murphy.

What do you lava about ‘Lava’?

“Lava” is a gorgeous song on multiple levels. Not only are the vocals and melodies unforgettable, but the song is able to seamlessly narrate the entire plot. In short, it’s a very special song.

Inside Out and Lava opened in theaters last weekend. Disney announced the following Monday that Inside Out’s $90.4 million opening weekend total is the highest-grossing opening for an original film in box office history. The previous record holder was James Cameron’s Avatar with $77 million.

Pixar’s latest offering will likely do well again this weekend at the box office. The only significant new film opening is Universal and Seth MacFarlane’s Ted 2 which is geared towards a very different audience.
