We’ve seen Maggie go from a farmer’s daughter to a ruthless zombie killer. Lauren Cohan, who plays Miss Maggie Greene on The Walking Dead, talks about her character’s transformation into a warrior.

In the season premiere of The Walking Dead, we saw a much more soldiered version of Maggie – tough with a knife and ready to fight off some walkers. From someone who used to simply see the zombies as sick people, Maggie has grown into quite the warrior. Lauren Cohan tells TV Fanatic:

“I think in last season Maggie was ready to be involved in something and she didn’t quite know what her challenge was going to be. So, now, by the time we get to season three, the way that she can contribute and fight is very apparent, but also that Maggie has always been a woman of strong instinct. Now she’s acting upon that.”

When Maggie found a weak spot in the armored prison walkers (by shoving a knife through their necks), she proved her survivalist battle skills. Now she and Glenn seem to be crucial members of the defense group. Maggie and Glenn are also the most stable romance on the show.

“You get to see this young couple go through the trials and tribulations a young couple would. They learn to communicate, learn to be vulnerable in front of each other, and especially for Glenn, this guy who’s kind of geeky.”

Cohan also reveals that she actually enjoys the prison set more than the farm, which separates her from the feelings of the rest of the cast.

“I like it more actually than last year. I loved the farm but [the prison is] so kind of just bare bones and your prison bunk is like heavenly. I like having a set and not being in the blazing sun. We have a really cool set.”

She laughs it off. “I don’t know. I’m weird. I like the prison.”

With the introduction of the prison this season, we’ll also see the introduction of the seemingly utopian town of Woodbury, and Cohan is excited for viewers to experience the two very different sets.

“Wait until you see Woodbury. The juxtaposition between us and them will be eerily illuminating and great to watch… we have a whole new group of characters.”

However much Maggie is growing to be a more integral part of the group this year, Cohan knows that she could be out of a job anytime, but she understands it’s the nature of the show.

“Whatever happens is okay with me. I’m not gonna lie, I don’t want to leave the show because I love this group and I love doing it. It’s the best job ever.”

How will Maggie’s stronger role affect the group this season?
