She won’t be appearing as a regular in the highly-anticipated sophomore season of Orange is the New Black this June, but Laura Prepon will be back full-time for season 3.

BuzzFeed, who has been on top of this story since the beginning, has confirmed that Prepon’s beloved inmate character Alex will only be appearing in four episodes of season 2 when it premieres this summer. The bad news ends there, thankfully, because their sources also tell them that she’ll become a full-time, regular cast member again if and when Netflix renews the show for a third season.

As readers may recall, the reason for Prepon’s lack of screen time in season 2 was due to the fact that she had already decided prior to the show’s premiere last summer that she didn’t want OITNB to become a regular gig. After season 1 premiered on Netflix and word got around that she was only appearing in one episode of season 2, fans expressed their disappointment.

“It was overwhelming” Prepon said of the fan response last month at PaleyFest. “I love these girls, I love Jenji. When there was a bit of a scheduling conflict the love I got from the fans was amazing.”

Viewers are eager to see how Orange is the New Black will handle Alex’s reduced role in season 2 when all thirteen episodes are released in under two months. According to brief comments from series creator Jenji Kohan in February, she’ll appear in “most of” the season (but spread out through four episodes).

Orange is the New Black season 2 premieres Friday, June 6 on Netflix.

The internet streaming service renewed the show for its sophomore season before season 1 was released, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see a season 3 renewal in the next couple of months.
