Laura Dern and Issa Rae are teaming up for a new project at HBO!

According to Deadline, Laura Dern and Issa Rae have signed on to star and executive produce a brand new limited series currently in development at HBO called The Dolls.

The new project finds Dern and Rae continuing their relationship at HBO. Dern stars in Big Little Lies, which has just wrapped filming on its second season. Rae writes and stars on Insecure, which has officially been picked up for season 4 by the premium cable network.

Inspired by true events, the limited series is set to tell the story of what transpired after Christmas Eve riots took place in two small towns in the state of Arkansas.

The riots, which occurred in 1983, broke out over the iconic Cabbage Patch dolls — one of the most iconic toy fads of the decade.

At the height of their popularity, Cabbage Patch Kids were considered the must-have toys for Christmas, and fights occasionally erupted between parents trying to get their hands on hard to find variations of the dolls in stores across the United States.

Dern and Rae’s new series, which takes place after the riots, is set to explore class, race, privilege, and what it takes to be a “good mother.”

Others involved with The Dolls on the production side of things include Laura Kittrell, Amy Aniobi, and Denise Davis, all of whom work with Rae on her hit HBO series, Insecure.

Davis, Kittrell, and Aniobi will all serve as producers on the project alongside Dern and Rae.

In addition, Kittrell and Aniobi will team up with Rae to write the limited series.

There’s no word yet on when The Dolls will premiere via HBO.
