The first trailer for the Mindy Kaling-penned film, Late Night, is here, and it has Kaling and Emma Thompson working in late night TV.

Most of us know Mindy Kaling best for her work on shows like The Mindy Project and The Office, but not everyone knows that she once used to work in late night television. Back in the day, Kaling was actually an intern on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and she’s channeling that time in her life into her new movie, Late Night.

Emma Thompson plays Katherine, a tough late-night television host who isn’t exactly loved by her staff. When she is accused of hating women, Katherine adds Molly (Kaling) to her writing staff. However, it seems that it’s all a bit too late, as she learns her network plans to replace her.

To prove that she’s more than a diversity hire trying to shake up the “boy’s club” of Katherine’s all-male writer’s room, Molly works to help Katherine keep her job. In doing so she doesn’t just help Katherine, but she also helps make some important change along the way.

Though sexism, racism, and someone being forced out of a job is a pretty heavy topic, Kaling puts her classic, charming spin on Late Night, and from what we see in the trailer, she tells an important story that is also fun and empowering.

Molly seems to be a fun and relatable character, and we basically fell in love with her after that opening scene in the trailer. Plus, Kaling and Thompson seem to have pretty amazing chemistry, and we can’t wait to see the two of them onscreen together.

Mindy Kaling is an incredibly writer, and well before she was making us laugh as a writer and actor on The Office or writing hilarious books, she penned the hilarious play Matt & Ben with her friend Brenda Withers. Kaling has always had a unique view of the world, and we’re so ready to see her take on late night television.

Late Night will be in theaters on July 7.
