Actress Kristin Chenoweth has joined Disney Channel’s forthcoming original movie Descendants which introduces the children of the iconic Disney villains.

Chenoweth will play Mal’s mother Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, according to Variety. The daughter is played by Dove Cameron, known for her role on Disney Channel’s Liv and Maddie.

A quick catch up: In December Disney Channel announced the new original movie which will see the offspring of villains Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen, and Jafar get a chance at redemption after being imprisoned on an island with their parents.

Other elder villains have yet to be cast, but given Chenoweth’s involvement it wouldn’t surprise us to see other big names join the film.

“These villainous descendants (Carlos [played by Cameron Boyce], Mal, Evvie [Sofia Carson] and Jay [Booboo Stewart], respectively) are allowed into the kingdom to attend prep school alongside the offspring of iconic Disney heroes, including Fairy Godmother, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel and Mulan,” according to Disney’s description from late last year. “However, the evil teens face a dilemma. Should they follow in their nefarious parents’ footsteps and help all the villains regain power or embrace their innate goodness and save the kingdom?”

Descendants, a live-action film, is directed by High School Musical helmer Kenny Ortega and is expected to premiere in 2015.

The news comes just one month before the Walt Disney Studios’ Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie hits theaters (May 30). We suspect Chenoweth’s portrayal of the character won’t be as dark as the one we’re getting from Jolie.

Thanks to Variety for the Chenoweth tip.
