Kristen Wiig may be the first actress to star in the all-female Ghostbusters 3.

Ghostbusters 3 (which is what we’re referring to it as until we get a better title) is reportedly going to be centered around an all-female Ghostbusters team and directed by Bridesmaids helmer Paul Feig.

The reason an all-female Ghostbusters movie will be the next Ghostbusters movie that will be made is mainly because Bill Murray essentially refused to return to star in Ghostbusters 3, forcing the franchise to go in other directions. Though Murray won’t be involved in the film, he’s not refraining from commenting on it.

Murray was at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend to promote the premiere his new movie St. Vincent and the Toronto Star asked Murray who he thought should be in the potential female-led Ghostbusters 3.

“Melissa [McCarthy, Murray’s St. Vincent co-star] would be a spectacular Ghostbuster,” Murray said. “And Kristen Wiig is so funny — God, she’s funny! I like this girl Linda Cardellini a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.”

All of the names Murray listed make perfect sense. Apart from them all being funny women, the majority of them have ties to Feig, the director. Wiig and McCarthy have worked with him on projects such as Bridesmaids and The Heat and the oft undervalued Cardellini starred in Feig’s equally fantastic and short lived TV show Freaks and Geeks. Stone hasn’t yet worked with Feig, but she’s hilarious and seems like a perfect fit.

After Murray’s comments, Yahoo Movies asked Wiig to comment. At a press junket for her new movie The Skeleton Twins (out in limited release tomorrow), Wiig was asked about Murray’s endorsement.

“That’s very flattering,” Wiig said. “I guess they’re making one from what I hear, which is pretty great.”

Clearly she knows more than she’s letting on.

“I will do whatever Bill Murray tells me to,” Wiig eventually said after she realized how big of a deal this actually is.

Does Wiig confirm that she will be in Ghostbusters 3 or that a female-led one will actually come to fruition? No. But it certainly sounds like she’d consider it, and given her past work with Feig we wouldn’t be at all surprised to see it happen.
