Kristen Stewart has been tapped to star in the indie Lie Down in Darkness, from Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper. Updated: The project may be farther off than previously thought.

Vulture reports:

Directed by Crazy Heart helmer Scott Cooper and set in genteel fifties Virginia, Lie Down will have Stewart play Peyton Loftis. As part of a dysfunctional and disintegrating family, Peyton is constantly compared to her crippled sister, Maudie, and her intense physical beauty makes her the object of her frigid mother’s jealous hatred and the target of her father’s incestuous, alcoholic lust.

Updated: Per The Hollywood Reporter:

A source close to the project cautions that the development is at an early stage. “While its exciting to see all the interest the project is generating, the film is still in the pre-production process and no offers to cast have been made as of yet,” says the source.

Vulture also notes that The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence had long been interested in the role, however her Hunger Games and X-Men obligations have kept her from the role. No production date has been set as of yet, although as the publication notes, this casting hurdle is sure to propel the film into production. Are you excited to see Kristen in the role?
