Basketball legend Kobe Bryant and one of his daughters died in a helicopter crash on Sunday morning, Los Angeles police have confirmed.

Update (2:40 PM PT): In a press conference, police announced that nine people including the pilot were on board the helicopter.

TMZ was first to break the news and reported that Kobe’s helicopter crashed on Sunday morning in the hills of Calabasas, California, about a half hour drive outside of Los Angeles. He was 41 years old and retired from the Los Angeles Lakers in 2016. Though the exact cause of the crash is still unknown, a dense layer of fog shrouded the area this morning.

Kobe’s 13-year-old daughter Gianna Maria Onore was also on board the helicopter when it crashed. The other passengers are still not known, but the group was reportedly traveling to Thousand Oaks, California for a young girls’ basketball practice. TMZ says his wife Vanessa Bryant was not on board. According to TMZ, Kobe was a frequent helicopter traveler.

Bryant won an Oscar two years ago for his film Dear Basketball in the Best Animated Short Film category.

The basketball legend is survived by his wife and his three other daughters.
