Despite a mere 12-year age difference, Eric Bana will be playing the dad of Charlie Hunnam’s King Arthur in Knights of the Round Table.

It’s been a while since we had an update on that new King Arthur movie, hasn’t it? But today we learned that Eric Bana has signed on to play Uther Pendragon, the intimidating father of King Arthur.

Since King Arthur is played by the 34-year-old Charlie Hunnam and Bana is only 46, we assume that they’ll either be aging Bana up for the role, or using him for backstory scenes which show Arthur growing up.

After all, there can only be one king of Camelot, and Arthur doesn’t become King Arthur until Uther dies.

When reporting the story, Variety even notes that Bana’s role “isn’t the biggest.” Director Guy Ritchie was allegedly hoping to cast Liam Neeson for the role, and was looking for a big name to help sell the movie.

Knights of the Round Table also stars Astrid Berges-Frisbey as Guinevere, with Jude Law reportedly in talks for a villain role (which we assume is Mordred or Lancelot).

Djimon Hounsou has long been rumored for the role of Merlin, but since we haven’t heard anything new since November 2014, we’re not certain that Hounsou and Law are still attached to the project.

Warner Bros. is hoping that Knights of the Round Table will launch a six-movie franchise about King Arthur and his legendary knights. The movie is set to open July 22, 2016.
