The Kingsman universe is growing with a forthcoming prequel film, The King’s Man. The first trailer dropped, and it looks badass!

Kingsman already began to seriously expand its cinematic universe after the events of Golden Circle introduced us to the American chapter, The Statesmen, as well as teasing future team-ups with the Statesmen and other chapters across the globe. However, before we begin those global adventures with Eggsy and the rest of the Kingsman gang, the franchise is taking us back in time.

The King’s Man is a prequel that will give us the origins of England’s most elite organization of secret agents. We’ll follow one of the organizations very first recruits, and we’ll see how it became the badass group we know today.

Of course, the Kingsman franchise was hit with some troubles recently as both The King’s Man and Kingsman 3 experienced several delays. However, things seem to be back on track, and we finally have our first look at The King’s Man in the first trailer.

The King’s Man is set in the early 1900s (and judging by some of the footage in the trailer, potentially during WWI). So what is the movie actually about? Apart from explaining the origins of the infamous secret service, we don’t really know.

However, we do know that this movie is going to feature some actual historical figures in the flick. Ralph Fiennes is playing the famed British archaeologist, writer, soldier, and diplomat T.E. Lawrence. Liam Neeson plays Army officer Herbert Kitchener, Gelix Yusupov (a man involved in the assassination of Grigori Rasputin) is portrayed by Daniel Bruhl, and Rasputin will be portrayed by Rhys Ifans.

The fun world of the Kingsman franchise paired with some real-life historical figures is really going to bring something special to the franchise. It’s always fun when films like this use their world and their characters to explain iconic and infamous events in history, and we can’t wait to see how The King’s Man explains how it impacted history.

You can learn the story for yourself when the Kingsman prequel, The King’s Man hits theaters on February 14, 2020.

Correction: This article originally stated that Gemma Chan was set to play Mata Hari, but she is not connected with the project.
