Alliances form in Killing Eve season 3, episode 2, and The Twelve start to place their pawns where they need them.

In the aftermath of Kenny’s tragic murder at the start of Killing Eve season 3, Eve has to choose what to do next. Meanwhile, Villanelle gets a better feel for how things are going to be from now on… and discovers the truth about Eve.

The funeral (or, the reunion)

Eve shows up to Kenny’s funeral in her usual Eve style: cranky, underdressed, and ready to roast everyone around her.

She takes on Kenny’s boss first, then Konstantin, and finally Carolyn, using her best sarcasm to tell them exactly what she thinks of them. It almost feels like a party, if it weren’t for the photo of Kenny, which makes me very sad.

Enter Gemma Whelan as Carolyn’s daughter Geraldine, who is very sweet and almost too nice to be normal. I guess having Carolyn as a mother results in some very nice, sensitive children?

But I’m pretty sure even Geraldine is hiding something. There’s no way she’s that well-adjusted. I guess we’ll find out, since she’s living with Carolyn in Killing Eve season 3.

Eve is understandably furious at how everyone is dealing with Kenny’s death, pretending it really was a suicide. She questions Carolyn in public, upset at her businesslike demeanor in the face of her son’s obvious murder.

No one knows that Eve has Kenny’s phone, although it’s locked. (Can we talk about how weird it is that Kenny’s background picture was a photo of himself, and not, like, something movie-related? I bet Kenny had an excellent taste in entertainment.) She’s trying to log in to no avail, even when she hides from Carolyn in the toilets while Audrey cries outside.

It turns out that Kenny was dating Audrey, although we don’t know much more about her. Will we see more of her? She’s kind of just… there.

Eve isn’t off the hook, though. Kenny’s boss knows she has the phone. It’s looking like they’re going to have to team up.

A new life in Barcelona

Villanelle, meanwhile, is digging her new Killing Eve season 3 life in Barcelona. Dasha has helped her get an extremely luxurious house with columns and carvings and windows that let you sing the opera out them. It’s Villanelle’s dream — not to mention all the beautiful people she sees walking by every day.

Dasha, however, has business in mind. She’s happy Villanelle is happy, because she wants to entice her to continue doing well. The next step to make The Twelve take her seriously, she says, is to prove her ability by showing that she’s good at teamwork.

The new guy is a classic kill-everybody-for-my-boyfriend type, which Villanelle has very little respect for. She offers a little bit of financial advice, but otherwise seems pretty aloof from the whole thing. That is, until the new guy says something relatable:

“When you love somebody, and they don’t love you back, it’s worse–it’s worse than–I don’t know what it’s worse than but it’s really shit.”

Villanelle looks away, probably thinking about her “dead” ex, Eve.

And, well, the teamwork doesn’t go that well. Villanelle, to her credit, was extremely upfront about being terrible at that. So, maybe we can say that this next part is all Dasha’s fault?

Villanelle’s second costume of Killing Eve season 3 is the most surprising one yet: that of a clown. They’re both clowns, actually, which I guess helps them “blend in” since there’s no way you can identify a suspect if the last time you saw them they were fully dressed up as clowns. I’m glad they didn’t make this season in 2016 because it could be nightmare fuel.

The new guy is terrible, messy. He ends up trying to strangle and bash the target’s head in, instead of killing him discretely. Villanelle doesn’t like him, so she kills him along with the target.

It just goes to prove that Villanelle may not be as ready to be a boss as she thinks she is — she’s meant to be an assassin-for-hire. Is Dasha just keeping her hopes up?

Carolyn and Konstantin place their bets

Carolyn wants to be back at work, but her boss doesn’t want her there. Everyone was expecting her to stay home after Kenny’s death, but she can’t go home: not when Kenny isn’t there.

Instead, she sits in her car and broods. And it’s only in those moments, when she’s alone, that we get to see the grief that she’s feeling.

To the outside world, she’s all business. She pays Eve a visit again, and asks for her help, but Eve is done with MI6, even when Carolyn shows her a photo of Villanelle’s latest kill.

“She’s back, Eve. She’s working.”

Eve controls herself but then goes to throw up at the back of the restaurant.

Still, Eve can’t stay away for long. Carolyn knows that Kenny’s death wasn’t a suicide (she even checks with Audrey!) and she wants revenge. This is different than anything they’ve worked on before. Eve and Kenny’s colleagues need Kenny’s thumbdrive to properly investigate.

Remember the magnet that Konstantin thoughtfully bought for Irina in Killing Eve season 3, episode 1? Well, it turns out it isn’t for Irina at all.

It’s a magnet with a microphone meant for Carolyn’s daughter, so he can bug Carolyn’s house. That’s probably what was meant by “fishing” in the delivery flyer–so if Konstantin didn’t kill Kenny, WHO DID?!

Konstantin pays Villanelle a visit in Barcelona and doesn’t get a very warm welcome. But after a little violence, Villanelle warms up to him. That’s when he drops the bomb, and tells her that Eve is alive.

“How do you know I’m back with The Twelve?”
”Because I never stopped working for them.”

So how related is Carolyn to The Twelve, in the end? Will we ever know? And how will The Twelve deal with Villanelle’s bad teamwork?

What will Villanelle do, now that she knows Eve is still alive?

Killing Eve season 3 airs at 9 p.m. EST on Sundays on AMC and BBC America.
