Kesha is about to let fans in on just what it took to bring her latest album, Rainbow, into the world.

The “Praying” singer teamed up with Rolling Stone to share an exclusive clip from her upcoming documentary, Rainbow: The Film, set to premiere this Friday, August 10.

The release of the documentary, which features a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the record, also serves to mark the one year anniversary of when Rainbow officially dropped.

The clip features Kesha stumbling through a dark forest as she drags an IV drip behind her — it’s an image that serves as a metaphor for what the singer actually went through at the time that she was making the album.

“When I wrote Rainbow, I was in a very dark place. I was alone, and I was scared,” says the singer in the clip. “And I was in rehab for an eating disorder that had gotten wildly out of control. They said I wasn’t allowed to work. And since I’m a musician they said I couldn’t even have a keyboard.”

As Kesha goes on to explain, music was much less work as it was a means for her to work through her demons.

“I pleaded, this isn’t work,” continues the musician as the clip progresses. “Finally they agreed to give me a keyboard for one hour a day. I knew I needed to change and take care of and move myself. Rainbow was the beginning.”

In addition to featuring the “Hymn” singer, the clip also features fellow musician Ben Folds, who co-produced the album’s title track with Kesha herself.
