We told you last year that Mark Romanek would direct an upcoming live-action Cinderella adaptation. Three weeks ago, Romanek exited the project, and Kenneth Branagh is rumored to take his place.

Branagh, well known for his roles in many Shakespeare movies (Much Ado About Nothing, Henry V, Hamlet), as well as Harry Potter (Professor Lockhart), directed the 2011 superhero film Thor, and is also directing Jack Ryan, due out on Christmas Day this year. It’s not completely sure whether or not Branagh will join Cinderella for Disney, as his time commitments promoting Jack Ryan may impede on his schedule for Cinderella, but we’ll keep you posted when we hear any sort of news.

Cate Blanchett is also signed on to star as the evil stepmother, and there hasn’t been any news yet on who is yet to play the title part. We’ll probably find that out after a director is locked down.

Chris Weitz, who penned The Golden Compass and directed New Moon, wrote the script for this rendition of the fairy tale.

What are your thoughts on Branagh potentially directing Cinderella? Who would you like to see play the title role? Do you think Blanchett would make a good evil stepmother? Leave us your thoughts below!

Thanks, IndieWire.
