Kelly Marcel is in talks to re-write an adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid fairy tale for director Joe Wright.

The screenwriter has been in the headlines over the past few months because of her involvement with the movie adaptation of E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey. James and Marcel have spent a good part of this year searching for a director and cast as they aim to get production underway for a summer 2014 release (according to Universal).

Interestingly, director Joe Wright – who wants to create The Little Mermaid (not for Disney, by the way), was reportedly one of the people who was in the running to direct Fifty Shades of Grey. It is being developed for two partners at Working Title.

Marcel’s transition from Fifty Shades to The Little Mermaid is amusing, but it’s important to note that she also wrote Saving Mr. Banks for Disney. The film stars Tom Hanks and follows the story of Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers (played by Emma Thompson) coming to Hollywood to see her story adapted into a film. Hanks shot on location at Disneyland for the movie, and it hits theaters December 20.

The adaptation of The Little Mermaid is in the same vein as Snow White and the Huntsman. That is, a live-action fairy tale adaptation outside of the popularized Disney realm. We’re looking forward to seeing where this one heads.

Thanks, Deadline.
