McG is helming a live-action version of He-Man: Masters of the Universe. Is Kellan Lutz starring in the role he was almost literally built for?

Twilight and Hercules star Kellan Lutz has been making some very loaded comments on Twitter hinting that he’s somehow involved with McG’s He-Man: Masters of the Universe.

If nothing else, at least it seems like he’s in consideration for a role:

Lutz, a great enthusiast of the ? emoticon, certainly has all the physical qualifications to play He-Man himself — in fact, the resemblance is almost uncanny.

He’s also worked with McG before; all the way back in the early 2000s, Lutz starred on The O.C., on which McG served as producer.

However, one main concern for fans might be whether or not Lutz has the chops to pull off what essentially needs to be a very convincing, self-ironic performance in order to avoid the ‘straight man’s scorn’ the movie would endure for taking itself too seriously.

In an age where superhero movies are practically the default storytelling formula, a decent adaptation of the campy 1980s animated series simply wouldn’t be enough. A by-the-numbers action flick wouldn’t cut it.

The last thing we’d want to see is for He-Man to be formulaic. There’s a good, fun story to tell here, but this movie needs Deadpool-levels of self-awareness to impress jaded audiences.

McG is mainly known as a TV producer, having worked on Chuck, Supernatural, Nikita, and The Mysteries of Laura. His movie credits include Terminator: Salvation, We Are Marshall, and Charlie’s Angels.
