Today Fox announced they’ve set the new judges panel for the upcoming twelfth season of American Idol: Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Randy Jackson are all on board.

Despite talk of becoming a mentor, long time judge Randy Jackson will return and be joined by newcomers Carey (who had been announced in July), Urban, and Minaj. The four will be appearing at the Idol New York auditions today.

In their announcement, Fox President of Alternative Entertainment said, “With an unparalleled star like Mariah, fan-favorite Randy, chart-toppers like Nicki and Keith and our incomparable host Ryan, we’ve put together one of the most exciting judging panels around.” Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller chimed in, “Idol’s star power has never been so great.”

Idol has had a rotating door of judges over the years as it tries to keep itself fresh and appealing to as many people as possible. Stars like Ellen Degeneres, Kara DioGuardi appeared around the time Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul were heading out. The past two season of Idol had judging panels made up of Jackson, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez.

We’re having a hard time imagining Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Randy Jackson with solid group chemistry – an all too important aspect of talent competition shows. Vote in our poll below to let us know if you’re satisfied.
