Katy Keene season 1, episode 7, “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” the series’ first musical episode, falls flat as the series doesn’t really know whether it’s showcasing the play or if their characters are just singing the songs.

On Katy Keene season 1, episode 7, Jorge prepares for his new night at Molly’s Crisis by working with Francois and Pepper to develop a one-man version of Broadway’s “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” while Katy has to decide whether or not she wants to create Patricia’s wedding dress after sleeping with Errol.

Honestly, Katy Keene season 1, episode 7 felt like a complete waste of my time, even under quarantine. There was nothing too special about this episode; however, Katy and Pepper’s stories were, at the very least, partially enjoyable.

‘Katy Keene’ season 1, episode 7 review

Katy Keene season 1, episode 7 could have been better, even if the stories had just been a little more personal or moved the show forward in some way. Instead, taking on “Kiss of the Spider Woman” made the writers have to create stories that fit the music for the characters, which is always the biggest flaw of any musical episode. There were big moments for the characters, but none that couldn’t have come without the musical behind the episode.

Somehow, Katy Keene’s first musical episode was worse than Riverdale‘s many, which have at least made some sense since the students are performing whatever musical they’ve chosen at their high school. With this, it just felt completely off. Like, why were these characters breaking out into song in the middle of a random situation? At least other shows give some sort of reasoning for it, like Dynasty did when Fallon was being slowly poisoned.

Katy and Pepper

Katy’s story on Katy Keene season 1, episode 7 was 100% the only one I thoroughly enjoyed. It was interesting to see how Katy handled this turn of events with Prince Errol and Patricia, and I love that she stood her ground and didn’t follow through on creating Patricia’s wedding dress. She made a mistake with Errol, and it wouldn’t have been fair to Patricia, especially when she inevitably finds out in the future.

Imagine how angry she would have been with Katy because even her wedding day would have been disgraced from this. Katy did the right thing, she found the courage to stand her ground and find a way around it, and I’m so proud of her. It’s rare to find a person or character like Katy nowadays.

One thing I’m not the biggest fan of is Katy’s blossoming relationship with Guy. We barely got to see her with K.O., and it doesn’t really make sense for them to have broken up if Katy’s just going to start seeing someone else. She wanted to experience life and focus on herself, and this entire story with K.O. just feels wrong. I really wish the writers had gone about it in a different way.

Pepper’s such a force to be reckoned with. I enjoyed her role in the overall episode because it showed how fiercely loyal and resourceful she is, and what she’s willing to do to help her friends succeed. There was little in it for Pepper, but she still went out of her way to make her friend’s vision come to fruition. What other friend would do that?

Pepper definitely deserved some more appreciation from Jorge for her role in making everything happen, even if Jorge wasn’t the biggest fan of what she had to do in order to achieve it.

As for Pepper, seeing her relationship with Didi is very high on my list for the upcoming episodes. We’ve seen a bit of Raj, now we’re seeing a little of Didi, and I’m surprisingly down to see this love triangle play out for now. It’s rare for a bisexual (as far as we know) character to have an arc like this on broadcast television, so let’s enjoy it while we can!

Jorge and Josie

First of all, it was very sweet of Josie to let Jorge share the final number with her on Katy Keene season 1, episode 7, even though she had a scout coming to the show to judge her talent and whether she’s worth any extra effort as an artist/star. Josie’s come a long way from hogging the spotlight in Riverdale, thinking of herself as the only one with any musical talent, and it’s refreshing to see what she’s also willing to do for her friends.

However, I absolutely hate — and I say this almost every episode — how tangled Josie is in the Cabots’ lives. Josie doesn’t feel like her own character, and this episode didn’t help as Alex was the only reason Josie was in the show as the Spider Woman. Alex and Xandra are controlling her life, whether directly or not.

Please, let this woman live her own life and pursue her dreams on her own. Josie should not be a pawn in the Cabots’ weird ass game with one another, and she needs to be involved with people who are solely concerned with making her a star, not fixing their own issues or image. Josie’s focus has been so altered since the beginning of the series… it’s time for a course correction.

If anything, Katy Keene season 1, episode 7 further cemented how entitled Jorge is. I understand being upset about losing the role you wanted to play, but he was so bitchy about it. Pepper worked her ass off to make this thing happen for Jorge, and for most of the episode, he was so very ungrateful. It was only made worse when the condition for funding was Josie’s performance, which could have turned into something huge for her.

Additionally, I’m tired of the writers acting like Jorge is one of the girls. He’s not a trans woman. He identifies, as far as we know, as a cis, gay man (which shouldn’t change because the actor is a cis man and shouldn’t play another trans woman in his career). The writers want him to be one of the girls so badly, but ignore the privilege he gets solely from being a man.

Jorge cannot understand what life is like for these girls, just like they cannot for him, and his male privilege needs to be acknowledged. He thinks he is entitled to everything (like, for instance, female roles) because he dresses in drag, which is absolutely ridiculous. If they keep this up, I’m never going to be able to like Jorge… he’s obnoxious, entitled, and so inconsiderate.

‘Katy Keene’ season 1, episode 7 review

If Katy Keene season 1, episode 7 gets another musical episode, it has to be better than this. Come up with an actual explanation for why they’re busting out into song, I beg of you, and pick a better musical. Or just do covers of pop songs because those are usually better when performed on television.

I’m hoping that Katy Keene improves in the next few episodes because the path it’s on is tiresome with every character except for Pepper. Josie with Alex, Jorge’s complete lack of awareness and sense of entitlement, and Katy’s relationship problems are the three worst aspects of the show that are focused on in every episode almost.

The next episode looks to be a good one, following the aftermath of the attack on Jorge and Bernardo… Hopefully this series can handle that in a respectful way, since they cannot take things seriously for more than three minutes in the Archie-verse.

Katy Keene continues Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW!
