Reports have surfaced saying that Kanye West decided not to perform at Coachella thanks to disagreements over his show’s staging.

Coachella recently released the names of artists set to perform at the 2019 festival, and one name was noticeably absent from the list: Kanye West. While he has had a very tumultuous year with his troubling comments about slavery and problematic political stances, he’s still got a lot of loyal fans.

However, according to reports, it wasn’t his political opinions or hot takes that caused him to bow out of Coachella. Instead, the artist isn’t featured during the festival because of disagreements over the staging of his show.

As Variety reports, West found the show’s traditional 60×40 stage “artistically limiting.” When West requested to alter the stage for his performance, the request was reportedly shot down by Goldenvoice, the company that produces the show. Goldenvoice said the stage couldn’t be removed or altered due to the logistical challenges it introduced to the show.

Of course, fans will remember that at 2018’s Coachella that Beyonce’s amazing HBCU-inspired show did some pretty drastic things with staging. Of course, Kanye West is known for his non-traditional sets during his concerts, so one can’t help but wonder what he wanted to do for a Coachella set that would prove too challenging for the music festival.

Neither Kanye West’s team nor Goldenvoice’s has commented on the reported disagreement yet.

Thankfully, Coachella still has an incredibly impressive lineup of talent that will be playing at the festival. Childish Gambino will be there for what will likely be Donald Glover’s final Coachella performance as Gambino, Ariana Grande, Tame Impala, Janelle Monae, Weezer, and more are set to perform.

Coachella tweeted out their full lineup, and the show looks like one you can’t miss. Coachella 2019 will take place April 12-14 and April 19-21.
