Of course we realize that the character of Oswin Oswald on Doctor Who is played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, but the larger question is how does she tie into the larger series? Now it’s time for your voice to be heard!

The hosts of our Doctor Who podcast, WhoHype, mused over this very topic on their most recent podcast. We’ve gone round and round on it, and now we need to hear your opinion. Just who is Oswin Owsald and how does she fit in?

As we pointed out on the podcast, it’s practically routine for a Doctor Who character to appear in multiple episodes as different characters. Eve Myles as Gwenneth/Gwen Cooper and Freema Agyeman as Adeola/Martha Jones are just two examples. Karen Gillan even played a soothsayer in “The Fires of Pompeii,” albeit under gobs of heavy make-up. There are also a myriad of actors who have appeared as different characters in classic and reboot Doctor Who. In short, when the likeness was so obvious, the writers have found a way to write themselves out of a plot hole by creating relatives.

On the other hand, this is the first time in the reboot era that the choice is deliberate. Steven Moffat could have cast anyone in the world as Oswin Oswald, so, why Jenna-Louise Coleman? How does she fit in? Is she the same character we’ll meet in the Christmas episodes? With her cheeky grin at the camera as she says “remember me,” she might as well have been holding up a neon billboard that said “FORESHADOWING.” Though, as obvious as a connection might seem, Moffat has stated that Coleman’s character would be modern girl with no connection to a previous character, but did he mean previous as in previous seasons? Was the grin just an “in-joke”?

So, let’s put it to a vote. What do you think the connection – if any – will be?
