Yesterday’s box office estimates put Jurassic World at a $204 million opening in the U.S., but now the official numbers are in, and they’re bigger than originally thought.

With the money now all counted from its weekend opening, Universal has announced that Jurassic World made $209 million in the United States, topping the original Avengers ($207 million) and making the dinosaur film the highest opening film of all time domestically.

Globally the film achieved an equally impressive feat: It’s $511+ million worldwide makes it the highest-grossing opener ever, easily beating the former leader Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 ($483.2 million).

Jurassic World is also the first film to ever crack $500 million over a single opening weekend.

It’ll be interesting to see how the film performs in the weeks ahead. With an “A” Cinemascore rating, Jurassic World will continue to benefit from good word of mouth and the hype around its box office success.

Many expect Universal to announce a sequel to Jurassic World very soon. The announcement is inevitable — the only question is when they’ll announce it, and what details they’ll share.

With this kind of success, it wouldn’t surprise us if Universal tries to build a “cinematic universe” around the dinosaurs (several films, spinoffs, origins, etc). Let’s just hope that the films don’t decline in quality as they did with the original Jurassic Park trilogy.
