One day after Jurassic World became the third highest-grossing film in box office history, Universal has announced a release date for the Jurassic World sequel.
The second film in the series, tentatively titled Jurassic World Sequel, will be released June 22, 2018. The date is roughly three years after Jurassic World stormed into theaters on June 12, 2015.
Universal also confirmed today that Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will star. Colin Trevorrow, the director of Jurassic World, and Derek Connolly, World’s screenwriter, will pen the script.
The studio didn’t name a director for the sequel today, so let the speculating begin!
Jurassic World 2 was inevitable given the original movie’s insane success. The dinosaur reboot has grossed $1.522 billion so far at the worldwide box office and has only been in theaters for a little over a month. In terms of total box office, it now only stands behind James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic.
It’ll be interesting to see how well the second installment does in theaters. Was the first movie just a fluke? Or will the sequel prove that this is a true force to be reckoned with?
Yesterday we speculated that Universal may take advantage of this success by launching a cinematic universe around the Jurassic brand (spinoffs, origin stories, etc). Today’s announcement seems to suggest that idea isn’t in the cards… yet.
