Since Jurassic Park 4 is due to hit theaters next summer, many dino-fans were wondering why Universal hadn’t yet decided on a director that would carry the franchise into the new decade.

Fans now have no reason to worry about Jurassic Park 4 being a director-less adventure. Colin Trevorrow, the director of last year’s surprise indie hit Safety Not Guaranteed, has been brought on to helm Jurassic Park 4, which effectively dispels rumors that Steven Spielberg would postpone Robopocalypse (again) in order to jump behind the steering wheel of his beloved exploration of life, science, and dinosaurs.

According to the confirmation from Deadline (via SlashFilm), Trevorrow was chosen because he has been a fan of Spielberg’s original Jurassic Park since he first saw it at the age of 17, and Universal executives were confident that he would preserve and protect the characters in the story (though he probably won’t protect them from dinosaurs).

Trevorrow’s name has been tossed around for high-profile projects since the debut of Safety Not Guaranteed, but this is a huge leap for the director who made his last film on a budget under one million dollars. Let’s just hope he has some big ideas for the franchise, which has stagnated since Joe Johnston’s Jurassic Park 3 debuted twelve years ago.

Casting has not yet been announced, and although it is unclear whether or not we’ll see Dr. Grant (Sam Neil) again, the quote from the executives above seems to indicate that we’ll be seeing a few familiar characters. Perhaps Universal has approached Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello (the children who were terrorized by Velociraptors and a T-Rex in the first installment) to reprise their roles? One can only assume that their characters are severely scarred by…you know…almost being eaten alive by dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes.

Filming for Jurassic Park 4 is set to begin later this year, with a script from Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). It will hit theaters on June 14, 2014.
