Here is my breakdown of the best and worst films being released in U.S. cinemas this month. Feel free to leave your opinions and suggestions in the comments.

June 1st

Snow White and the Huntsman – An all-star cast featuring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth assemble for this darker take on the classic fairy tale. After, in my opinion, the ghastly Mirror, Mirror, could this be the film to bring the story back in fashion? Verdict: See

Piranha 3DD – This ‘sexy horror’ is offensive and infantile on so many levels that writing about it made me feel a bit ill. David Hasselhoff returns to screens after almost ruining The Spongebob Squarepants Movie for everyone. Verdict: Don’t See

Killer Joe – Emile Hirsch and Matthew McConaughey star in this interesting-sounding drugs-thriller. Verdict: Try to See

June 8th

Prometheus – In a slightly boring month of releases, this is by far the most exciting film being offered. Ridley Scott returns to what he does best with original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron (isn’t she busy) starring. Think Alien prequel-meets-Avatar – but with real actors and a good director in 3D. Verdict: Film of the Month

Bel Ami – Released in February in Europe, Robert Pattinson’s Paris-set sex drama finally arrives on US shores. Also stars Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci. Not supposed to be very good, unfortunately. Verdict: R-Patz superfans see. Others avoid.

Madagascar: Europe’s Most Wanted – The gang of wild animals are back with Jessica Chastain providing a voice. If you choose one animated film this summer – better make it Ice Age 4 or Brave, although it is nice to see David Schwimmer acting again – it’s been a while. Verdict: Don’t see

June 15

Rock of Ages – Tom Cruise continues his second attempt at a comeback, which began with the fantastic MI: Ghost Protocol with this musical-comedy from the director of Hairspray, co-starring Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand. Verdict: See

That’s My Boy – As a member of a small group called ‘People who still think Adam Sandler is funny,’ I am highly anticipating this film, his first R-rated in a decade, which sees him play a druggy-released-from-prison-dad who attends his son’s wedding to borrow money off him. In my opinion, it looks hilarious, partially due to the presence of acting legend James Caan. Verdict: See

June 22

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – One of summer’s most original films arrives, with Timur Bekmambetov at the helm, and Tim Burton present at filming at some stage. The lead, Ben Walker, looks remarkably like Liam Neeson, but will THOSE FACTS ALONE bring you into a movie theatre? Verdict: Don’t See

Brave – I love Pixar, but this looks unoriginal and boring to me – a 100% rip-off of How to Train Your Dragon. Verdict: Don’t See

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World – A romance based around a meteorite heading for earth was going to happen eventually, and this one stars one of my favourite actors, Steve Carell, as well as Keira Knightley and William Petersen. Verdict: See

To Rome with Love – Woody Allen visits one of the world’s most beautiful cities with Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg and Alec Baldwin making their Allen debut, and Penelope Cruz and Allen himself returning. Verdict: See

June 29

Magic Mike – Steven Soderbergh (this is his third film in 12 months) directs Tatum as a male stripper. Verdict: Don’t See
