Julia Roberts and Sean Penn are teaming up to star in a brand new anthology series coming down the pipeline at Starz.

In a press release sent out on Monday (February 22), Starz announced that Julia Roberts and Sean Penn have both singed on to star in the premium cable network’s Gaslit.

The anthology series is directed and executive produced by Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic) and is based on Slate’s award-winning podcast, Slow Burn.

Roberts and Penn will star in the series inaugural season, which focuses on adapting Slow Burn’s Watergate season.

Described as a modern take on Watergate, Gaslit is set to focus on exploring the untold stories and forgotten characters of the scandal— from Nixon’s bumbling, opportunistic subordinates, to the deranged zealots aiding and abetting their crimes, to the tragic whistleblowers who would eventually bring the whole rotten enterprise crashing down.

At the heart of the story is Martha Mitchell (played by Julia Roberts). Martha is the wife of Nixon’s Attorney General, John Mitchell (Sean Penn), but she also happens to be something of a celebrity socialite out in her home state of Arkansas.

Martha is of particular significance because she’s the first to publicly speak out on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate. Nixon’s presidency begin crumbling as a result, but so does Martha’s personal life.

Meanwhile, despite his loyalty and close personal relationship with Nixon, John Mitchell finds himself having to choose between his wife, Martha, and the President.

Behind the camera, Mr. Robot vet Robbie Pickering serves as showrunner. In addition, Pickering serves as writer on Gaslit alongside Amelia Gray, Alberto Roldán, Anayat Fakhraie, Uzoamaka Maduka and Sofya Levitsky-Weitz.

Currently, there’s no word on when we can expect to see Gaslit starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn debut via Starz.
