Nope, this is not another comic book adaptation. Julia Roberts will be helming the feature film version of the Batkid Begins documentary.

Anything that’s ever been drawn seems to be making its way onto the big screen these days, from Aquaman to Sandman to Spider-Man to Superman to Wonder Woman… but this time, we’re talking about an actual, real-life superhero.

Julia Roberts is stepping behind the camera to produce Batkid, a feature film based on the documentary Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World.

Dana Nachman’s crowd-funded documentary follows 5-year-old leukemia patient Miles Scott, whose wish through the Make-A-Wish foundation made him “Batkid” for the day.

Scott, who is now in remission, was taken through a series of staged missions in San Francisco, which had been transformed into Gotham City in order for the young hero to fight bad guys alongside Batman himself.

More than 25,000 local residents came out to participate, and the story quickly went viral on social media platforms.

The moving documentary premiered this weekend at the Slamdance Film Festival, and Julia Roberts quickly nabbed the rights to the feature film version.

Nachman, who wrote, produced and directed Batkid Begins, will serve as executive producer on the film.

Says Nachman, “It’s thrilling to me that Ms. Roberts and her team watched our film and were so moved by it that they want to dedicate their time and creative capital to make sure the widest audience possible will know and love Miles’ story and the spirit of this intimate special event that went global, as much as we do.”

No news yet on a director or a writer for this project, but we’re sure more details will follow shortly.
