Avengers 2 director Joss Whedon recently sat in on a podcast while promoting his latest film and revealed that Loki won’t be appearing in The Avengers sequel.

Whedon famously had Loki call Black Widow a “mewling quim” in The Avengers, so when the good folks over at the Empire Film Podcast asked Joss Whedon if we would see another quimmy quip from any of the characters in Avengers 2, Whedon easily replied that we wouldn’t see Loki saying those mean things in the Avengers sequel because…well…he just isn’t involved.

Whedon has a reason for not bringing Loki into Avengers 2, and it’s probably the same reason why he decided to rotate heroes Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into the Avengers sequel’s roster. “Imitating what I did before is the surest way to do it not as well,” said Whedon.

Why won’t Loki appear in ‘Avengers 2’?

We have plenty of theories concerning why Loki won’t be showing up to the party. Aside from the fact that he was promised by an extension of the most powerful force in the universe that if he failed his task in The Avengers that there wouldn’t be a crack or crevice that he would be able to hide in.

Guess who failed to secure the Tesseract in The Avengers? That’s right.

We did see Thor himself threaten Loki with death if he was betrayed in the latest Thor: The Dark World trailer, but we at Hypable believe that Loki will meet his fate with someone else. It should be noted that Tom Hiddleston does still have a six film contract with Marvel, but when Thanos says he’s coming after you, let’s just say your days are numbered.

It would also make a great kicker to Thor:The Dark World, and help amp up excitement for the villain that Whedon has called “the grand-daddy of all villains.” There are a number of reasons why the God of Mischief won’t be showing his face in Avengers 2, the majority of the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe don’t cross-over anyway, but our theory is that we’ll see the last of him in the end-credits sequence for Thor:The Dark World
