We’re still not over Firefly – and apparently, neither is Joss Whedon. But how likely is a revival of the ill-fated Fox series that was cancelled over 10 years ago?

Between the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. television series and the second Avengers movie, Joss Whedon is a busy man. His resume includes such cult classics as Buffy, Dollhouse and Angel, but it is Firefly which still holds a special place in his heart.

And speaking to the Toronto Sun, Whedon admits that, “I’ll never really accept [the cancellation], and I always, in the back of my head, think, ‘What if I could get the old gang back together?'” he says. Deep breaths, fandom.

Whedon also reveals that it is still a dream of his to return to the series. “It’s something I would love to do,” he says.

But could they actually pull an Arrested Development or Boy Meets World and get the Serenity crew together again, after 10 years? “Part of me is like, ‘God, it would be great when I finish Avengers 2 to do that,'” Whedon says, but with all the actors busy with other projects, we shouldn’t get our hopes up too much.

“I suspect very strongly that after Avengers 2 the next thing I do will be a one-man show. Possibly one monkey,” Whedon jokes.

As logistically unlikely as another season or movie might be, we’re gonna choose to stay optimistic though – the Firefly fandom has proved remarkably strong, and last year at the San Diego Comic-Con, the powers that be managed to gather together the entire cast for a special reunion panel. So keep your fingers crossed, Browncoats!
