Joss Whedon, of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Avengers fame, is gearing up for a brand new project!

It’s no secret that Joss Whedon had a hard time with Avengers: Age of Ultron, the follow-up to his immensely successful first Avengers movie.

Around the time of the movie’s 2015 debut, he was very outspoken about his conflicts with Marvel, and his frustration at the resulting patchwork-like feel of the final product.

Since then, we haven’t heard much from Whedon, other than the news from last year’s San Diego Comic-Con that he was working on a Victorian female Batman comic (still waiting on that bad boy, by the way!). He even left Twitter following the release of Age of Ultron.

But in a new interview, it seems like Whedon is finally ready to start talking about his next project, if only in anecdotal passing (as is his way). At the Tribeca Film Festival, he said his new movie is a “definite departure” from Marvel — and, we assume, superheroes — and added:

I wrote all the way through to the end of the movie, and I was crying so hard in public, that the restaurant closed, the valet guy came to me and then turned around and turned away. I had to take off my shirt and blow my nose into it. I couldn’t stand up. I couldn’t stop crying. And I got in the car and — luckily someone else was driving — kept crying. I just wrote the end of the movie and I’m pretty sure it works.

And Whedon, who also confessed to being obsessed with Hamilton (who isn’t?!), is likely not coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as his Ultron experience has clearly left a bad taste in his mouth.

“I think that did a disservice to the movie and the studio and to myself,” Whedon said, as quoted by Variety. “It was not the right way to be, because I am very proud of it. The things about it that are wrong frustrate me enormously, and I had probably more of those than I had on the other movies I made.”

He stands by that while there are obviously elements about Age of Ultron that didn’t work, “I also got to make, for the second time, an absurdly personal movie that talked about how I felt about humanity, and what it means, in very esoteric and bizarre ways, for hundreds of billions of dollars. The fact that Marvel gave me that opportunity is so bonkers, and so beautiful, and the fact that I come off of it feeling like a miserable failure, is also bonkers, but not in a cute way.”

Mark Ruffalo said at the event that he’d been “begging” Whedon to come back for future Avengers, Hulk and Thor movies, but, “he said, ‘I’ll never do it again,'” Ruffalo recalled.

We’re glad to see Whedon back in the saddle, as he has of course brought us some of our all-time favorite media products. We can’t wait to hear more about his new project!
