At Paleyfest’s Dr. Horrible reunion, Joss Whedon revealed how profitable his Neil Patrick Harris-starring web musical really was.
The cast of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog reunited with Joss Whedon this weekend at Paleyfest in New York City, for a screening of the cult hit musical and a Q&A with adoring fans.
At the event, Whedon revealed a fascinating statistic: as reported by Variety, he allegedly made more money from Dr. Horrible than he did from writing and directing the first Avengers movie.
This is pretty mind-boggling when you consider the massive success of Marvel’s Avengers, which made a staggering $1.52 billion at the box office.
But since its initial free release, Dr. Horrible has been available through iTunes, on DVD, and ran on The CW in 2012. We imagine that’s a fair bit of royalties coming Whedon’s way, which he doesn’t have to share with big studios and production companies.
Will there ever be a ‘Dr. Horrible 2’?
It’s been seven years since Nathan Fillion, Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day stole our hearts in Whedon’s self-funded low-budget web musical, and there is still talk of a sequel.
But don’t get your hopes up. The project, “is where it’s been for a long time,” Whedon said tactfully, offering no firm confirmation or dismissal.

Although Whedon said the team behind the musical began working on a potential sequel straight after wrapping up production in 2008, “I [then] went to work at Marvel, and the rest is a blur.”
Joss Whedon has been keeping a low profile since the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron earlier this year.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2015, he revealed that he’s working on a comic book series titled Twist about a, “Victorian-era, female Batman.”
